Road Trip: Day 80

Dateline: Minneapolis (around the ‘world’ in 80 days)

For “world” read “Minnehaha Parkway.”  With Vance’s bike I toured Minneapolis’s 8th wonder of the world the parkway system which is, perhaps, the oldest part of the bike trails which are the envy of all bicycling cities, even Portland.

It’s like riding through a wonderland

My destination on the ride was the family home on 39th Avenue South just off the parkway. Next door in the brick house Susan McLean was writing her PENNIES FOR THE PIPER, still in print and selling. The story was Susan’s therapy and devotion to her lost daughter. It’s a very early “young adult” novel. Readable, touching.

Left: the Jollymore home 1981-3. Right: the Sue and Austin McLean home. Three authors (including Amy Jollymore) living within shouting distance.
