Road Trip: Day 43 to 45

Dateline: Starbuck, Minnesota: Lake Minnewasca

stb-6 First, Minneswasca means something like “good water” in the Ojibwe language. I haven’t been able to consult with local Ojibwe speakers on this so whether the reference is to “good to drink,” “good traveling water,” or “good fishing water” I cannot say. It is also possible or likely, that the meaning has nothing to do with the “use” of the water at all.

stb-9

The lake is a noted sports fishing lake, walleye especially. It is a place for me to relax, do some work, and get ready for the next leg of my journey.

It is a great place to have a shoreline fire or to sit under Jef’s canopy and watch the rain come in and pass. Look carefully above for one or two hail stones bouncing in the grass.

The mild late-summer climate affords time for walking and enjoyment of natural and cultivated beauty. I suppose the corn is GMO but not the flowers or the maple tree showing very early color. The temperature has barley dipped to the low 50s at night. And of course there is always something to eat:

stb-13A feast fit for a Finn, made by Swedes in New Jersey, of course.
